Tyre History
History of Agricultural Tyres in Australia
1930s
Due to rubber shortages during war years, steel wheels were widely used until after World War II.
1940s
In the late 1940s to mid-50s, narrow high-profile, bias ply tractor tyres became the popular choice. During this time, sizing was based on the rim width, not tyre size (eg. 13.50 x 32).
1960s
It wasn't until the 1960s that an increased selection of wider profile tyres appeared on the market. These were widely used until the 1990s.
1990s
Vast differences emerged in performance and set up of radial tyres in comparison to bias plies.
2000s
The industry has experienced a steep learning curve in fully understanding and benefiting from radial tyre technology in agriculture. It is a process which continues today. As radial technology in the agricultural industry continues to evolve, farmers and dealers have found it difficult to cope with the technology and its application. Due to the rapid uptake of technology, claim rates have subsequently surged.
